Upstream - A celebration in music of Hilary Tann (1947-2023)

The Marsyas Trio present a recital honouring Welsh composer Hilary Tann’s music, and her love of nature. Described as shimmering and weightless, effective and moving ... it reinforces the grounded spiritual ecstasy that is Tann’s distinctive musical outlook (J. Dalton, Albany Times Union, 5/24/20), Tann’s music is a reflection of the humanity behind it - one that will be sorely missed. The Trio pair Tann’s Gardens of Anna Maria Luisa de ‘Medici with other pieces whose inspiration wells from nature. From nearly a century ago, “Scenes of the Forest” by the French composer Bonis, and “Ashes'' by Norwegian composer Saariaho. Churchill College's Artist By-Fellow Helen Vidovich will present the premiere of Dr Ewan Campbell’s work for solo flute and electronics Rivertime Sketch.

Programme:

Melanie Bonis (1858-1937): Scènes de la forêt, Op. 123 (1928) for flute, cello, piano, arr. Roseanna Dunn

Hilary Tann (1947-2023): Gardens of Anna Maria Luisa de ‘Medici (2004)

Ewan Campbell (b. 1983): River Time Sketch, for solo alto flute and pre-recorded alto flutes (premiere)

Thea Musgrave (b.1928): Canta, canta! for alto flute, cello and piano 4’
