This programme presents music inspired by distant countries; commissioned to write works reflecting countries they had never visited, Haydn, Beethoven and Ravel aptly captured the spirit of those faraway lands in these rarely heard vocal works, whilst Hilary Tann’s music remains spiritually and deeply connected to her native Wales from her current residence in the United States. A close connection with poetry permeates throughout the programme.
Ravel’s Madagascan songs touch upon the senses with their raw beauty, evoking the spirit of that exotic land. Beethoven, likewise, never visited the British Isles but his Welsh songs travelled via smugglers during to the Napoleonic wars. Haydn’s chamber trio was written to satisfy an English public he was yet to meet, whereas his Welsh song settings followed his subsequent English visits. As part of an 18th-century movement to collect folk songs, the best composers of the day were called upon, and Haydn was the first ‘continental’ composer to be commissioned for these collections.
